Collective Futures Wisdom
This page is a home for my evolving thinking on what I increasingly describe as Collective Futures Wisdom.
For me, Collective Futures Wisdom is an ongoing exploration of how diverse disciplines, worldviews, traditions, belief systems and lived experiences can be brought into dialogue when imagining and shaping the future. It is rooted in the belief that the future should be approached through dialogue, ethical reflection, responsibility, care and moral imagination.
The ideas shared here reflect questions, insights and practices that continue to inform my work. Rather than presenting finished answers, this page documents an evolving journey of inquiry into how individuals, organisations and societies can develop wiser relationships with the future.
Questions I am currently exploring
- How do we develop our relationship with the future? What enables people, organisations and societies to engage with the future in thoughtful, responsible and meaningful ways? How can futures consciousness, futures literacy and anticipatory capacities be strengthened?
- How can we move beyond narratives of inevitability? Many decisions are shaped by assumptions that current trajectories are unavoidable. What happens when we question those assumptions and create space for genuinely different futures?
- How do we cultivate anticipatory resilience in an age of uncertainty? How can people, organisations and societies develop relationships with the future that support responsibility, adaptability, learning and meaningful action in the face of uncertainty?
- How can ethics, care and responsibility become more central to how we imagine, discuss and shape the future? How might moral awareness and ethical reflection contribute to wiser collective engagement with the future?
Recent reflections AND IDEAS IN DEVELOPMENT
How is Futures Literacy developing across Europe? What can we learn from the diverse ways Futures Literacy is understood, practised and institutionalised across Europe? Together with Etrit Shkreli (Sabancı University, Türkiye) and Marina Andeva (University American College Skopje, North Macedonia), I am exploring the capabilities, practices and enabling conditions to strengthen our collective relationship with the future.

What does anticipatory resilience mean when the future itself becomes contested? If resilience means recovering, adapting or transforming, what capacities are needed when societies face profound uncertainty about what kind of future is emerging? How can resilience remain a meaningful concept when shared assumptions about the future begin to erode and competing visions of desirable futures emerge?

Futures Literacy beyond linear time: What happens when different understandings of time shape how people relate to the future? Together with Etrit Shkreli, I am exploring how different temporalities influence Futures Literacy practices and openness to alternative futures.

Hope, Resilience and Agency at the Time of Monsters: Hope is not optimism. It is a practice. Speaking of human agency, responsibility and everyday participation in systems that produce exclusion, injustice and suffering, should a meaningful transformation not begin with examining our own assumptions, choices and actions?
